Amber is hard, translucent, fossilized tree resin produced by extinct coniferous trees from the Tertiary period. It is typically yellow in color but can range from brown to orange or red. Amber is graded by color, clarity, rarity of inclusions (popularized by Jurassic Park), hardness, color of fluorescence, and sometimes locality. Many ambers fluoresce green or blue under ultraviolet light, giving added appeal and value! While Amber is hard enough to use in jewelry, Copal is young amber that does not have the same durability. This beautiful carving is delicate and should be handled with care.
